How we estimate caffeine
Our caffeine estimates are calculated from the amount of ground coffee used, the type of coffee bean and an assumed brewing extraction efficiency.
We assume Arabica contains approximately 1.2% caffeine and Robusta approximately 2.2% caffeine by weight.
For brewing, we use illustrative caffeine extraction efficiencies of 65% for espresso and 80% for filter-style methods.
DOUBLE is 100% Robusta coffee, which is naturally higher in caffeine than Arabica. FULL is 100% Arabica.
HAFF contains 50% regular Arabica and 50% decaffeinated coffee. QUARTER contains 25% regular Arabica and 75% decaffeinated coffee.
Real decaf contains small residual amounts of caffeine, which are not included in this simplified model.
Actual caffeine content varies between beans, brewing methods and individual preparations.
The calculator uses an assumed five-hour caffeine half-life to estimate how much caffeine remains in the body over time. Individual caffeine metabolism varies.
These results are illustrative estimates, not laboratory measurements, blood caffeine concentrations or predictions of sleep quality.
The bean averages are illustrative literature-based assumptions, not measurements of HAFF CAFF beans. Extraction efficiencies are provisional. We assume immediate absorption and no prior-day carryover. Calculations retain full precision; displayed caffeine is rounded to whole milligrams.
