Why Swiss Water?

Decaf without the chemical solvents.

Swiss Water removes caffeine using water and filtration - not chemical solvents.

Yes. Water. Just water.

The process is designed to take caffeine out while keeping as much of the coffee's natural flavour and character as possible.

And when half - or even three quarters - of your blend is decaf, that really matters.

Why we chose it

We wanted the lower-caffeine part of HAFF CAFF to be something we were proud to put in the bag, not something we had to disguise.

So we chose a process that gives us:

  • No solvent-based decaffeination
  • Designed to keep coffee character
  • Coffee that still tastes like proper coffee

The result

Put simply: water, filtration and some clever science.

☕ Want to geek out on how it works?

The clever bit is simple.

Caffeine naturally moves from where there's more of it to where there's less.

Think of a drop of food colouring in a glass of water. At first, the colour is concentrated in one place. Then it naturally spreads through the water until things become more evenly balanced. Caffeine behaves in a similar way.

  1. Green coffee bean
  2. Soaked in water
  3. Caffeine moves out
  4. Carbon filter catches it
  5. Clean water returns to beans
  6. Up to 99.9% of caffeine removed

Green coffee beans are soaked in warm water, allowing caffeine and other soluble compounds inside the bean to move.

The water is then passed through special carbon filters that capture the caffeine. The flavour-rich water is kept and reused around the beans.

Inside the bean: more caffeine.
Outside the bean: very little caffeine.

So caffeine naturally moves out of the bean and into the surrounding water.

The water keeps circulating through the carbon filters, which keep catching the caffeine, while the flavour-rich water continues around the beans.

The result is a green coffee bean with dramatically less caffeine, designed to hold on to as much of the coffee character as possible.

One thing worth being clear about: that "up to 99.9%" figure is about the Swiss Water decaf beans themselves. HAFF and QUARTER blend that decaf with fully caffeinated coffee, so your finished cup is reduced caffeine - never caffeine-free.

Then it's dried, roasted and turned into HAFF CAFF.

No solvent stripping. Just water, filtration and some clever science.
